Finished the empennage fairing. I cut off the parts which did not fit well and glassed a couple of layers right onto the empennage. Lots of sanding and filling… also added tinnerman washers, they give a finished look and I think they keep the fiberglass holes from wearing out.

After taking off the wing and riveting on the aft deck, we put the tailfeathers back on. We adjusted the servo cables and worked on the rudder travel, which was exceeding the limit on one side by one degree. To fix that, we built a new rudder stop out of unused material.

Apparently, in 2012 the elevator horns were adapted in the lower part for some reason and now they do not have enough mating surface with the control stops. The elevator stop needs to be adapted for this reason. The 2 horns do not line up either, which can be accommodated by filing the stop accordingly.

Mounted the rest of the tailfeathers today. Looks like an airplane now! A big airplane…

Mounted the elevators and ordered longer rod end bearings, since the ones provided were just barely flush with the nutplates and did not show the 2 threads required.
Attached the assembly onto the tailcone.

Disliked the garmin servo mount bracket for the yaw damper. It needs to be riveted onto a bulkhead, getting these rivets in was hard enough to begin with, so no way we are messing with these again… my dad built a bracket to mount both servos. The new bracket has a lot of advantages: Stop brackets for the pitch servo are riveted onto the bracket, no messing with the teeny tiny screws Both servos mount to the same bracket, the whole bracket can be removed from the bellcrank assembly and taken...

MD3614M bearings were just a tiny bit too short for the elevators to remain clear of the horizontal stabilizer rear spar. Ordered a couple of MM-3M-42 bearings from Van’s, which are about 4 threads longer
